PUBLICATION DETAILS: Philadelphia, Everts & Kirk 1885. Maps in color. 207 pages. This is the only Nebraska State Atlas made in the 19th century.
CONTENTS: More than 360 counties and separately-mapped cities are shown. More than 50 illustrations, many related to rural scenes and farming. Towns, township lines, section lines, railroads, incomplete railroads, public roads, school districts, schoolhouses, cemeteries, marshes, rivers, streams and post offices are identified. Nebraska had been admitted into the United States in 186 and its internal configuration was not yet finalized. Indigenous peoples had lived in the region of present-day Nebraska for thousands of years before European colonization. The historic tribes in the state included the Omaha, Missouria, Ponca, Pawnee, Otoe, and various branches of the Lakota (Sioux). Many of those names are reflected in the names of the towns.
COMPLETENESS: The atlas appears complete. There is no evidence of pages having been torn out or cut out. There are maps numbered 7 through 207. There is no map number in the index greater than 207. The maps are in surprisingly very good condition. None of the printed pages (title, index, organization records, illustrations, etc.) is numbered. For reference to those, the nearest map number is used. The state map is numbered 7 and is the seventh page. It is wrinkled.
CONDITION: Bound in half leather burgundy cloth-covered boards now worn. Ink stain on cover. Coverers are coming loose. Gilt title on front cover. The state map is wrinkled; all others are in very good condition. Nearly 140 years old.
