Taliaferro was a well-known dealer of rare maps and prints in New York. He was a co-founder of Cohen & Taliaferro LLC, a firm specializing in fine antique maps. Taliaferro worked in the field for over 45 years, helping to develop some of the most important private and institutional collections in the United States He compiled Cartographic Sources in the Rosenberg Library (1987) and has authored several articles on Virginia genealogy and 17th- through 19th-century mapmaking.
