Description

DEDICATION: “Presenté a Monseigneur le Dauphin … Hubert Jaillot. Imprint: A Paris … 1691.”

BACKGROUND: The original map by Nicolas Sanson was reworked by his sons Guillaume (1633-1703) and Adrian (1639-1718) sometime after 1673 and published in 1692 in Alexis-Hubert Jaillot, Atlas Nouveau. This is a double-hemispherical world map showing California as an island, an unknown southern continent, and the supposed coasts of eastern Australia, western North America and western New Zealand.

PUBLICATION DETAILS: Engraved map on two joined sheets. Image size 35 inches wide by 21 inches high. Strong impression. No color. This is the first state of the fourth plate of this map now dated 1691 and engraved for the “Atlas Nouveau” of1692. This Sanson and Jaillot 1691 decorative map shows the world on a double hemisphere projection. Above the hemispheres are cherubs riding dolphins and holding the coat of Aarms of the Dauphin of France to whom this map is dedicated.

RARITY: As to its rarity, the only copy with this title and date (1691) appearing on the internet at this time had been sold earlier. There were no 1691 copies of this map listed by other dealers or by any institution.

CONDITION: Very good condition.
